At the crossroads between Latin and Slavic Europe, Istria offers up the best of both worlds. It packs a lot into its small territory, so this tour shows off the best bits – rustic villages, Roman ruins, Byzantine basilicas and a taste of its world class food scene. You’ll visit Pula, Gržini and Poreč, enjoying scenic landscapes between stops.
The day begins in Pula, a town famous for its exceptionally well-preserved Roman amphitheatre. However, this iconic landmark is only one part of Pula’s rich historical heritage. Other must-see sights include the Temple of Augustus and the triumphal arch, alongside a number of Byzantine and Baroque churches and an imposing Habsburg fortress.
The tour then continues inland to the small hamlet of Gržini, where you will enjoy a traditional Istrian lunch, complemented by local wine, before heading back to the coast to explore the charming town of Poreč.
After lunch, you will arrive in Porec’s Old Town and stroll along the ancient Roman streets of Decumanus and Cardo Maximus. The walk leads to the town’s most important monument – the Euphrasian Basilica, one of the finest preserved examples of early Byzantine art in the Mediterranean and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
